International Women’s Day 2026: Celebrating Women Who Self-Build with Courage
Self-build is one of the boldest decisions anyone can make. This International Women’s Day, we celebrate the women bringing courage, vision and determination to self-build projects across the UK.
In previous years, we have celebrated incredible women across our business and the wider construction industry on International Women’s Day — the leaders, managers, designers, manufacturers, problem-solvers, promoters and champions helping shape the industry today.
This year, we want to celebrate another group of equally important women: the women who, single-handedly or alongside their partners and families, make the brave decision to self-build their own home.
They are not waiting for the perfect time. They are not putting the idea aside until everything feels easy or certain. They are moving forward and choosing to build a home around the life they want to live.

Self-build takes courage
Self-building requires a leap of faith
It means stepping away from the idea that you have to accept whatever is available and instead believing you can create something better. It means choosing not to settle for compromise where compromise no longer serves you. And it means trusting that a better way of living is possible.
That is why self-build is such a courageous decision.
Women are not standing on the sidelines
For many people, self-build is not a solo journey. It is a shared ambition, shaped by households, couples and families working together toward the same vision.
That matters because it reflects the reality of self-build far more honestly than outdated assumptions ever could.
Women are not standing on the sidelines of these projects. They are helping shape the decisions, weighing the risks, holding the vision and driving the momentum forward. They are not just contributing to the look and feel of a home. They are influencing the whole direction of the project.
Anyone who has been through a self-build journey knows that it is about far more than a tidy division of labour. Roles shift constantly. Confidence shifts. Pressure shifts. One person leads in one moment, the other steps forward in the next.
And when there are thousands of decisions to make, women are taking an equal role in shaping the answers that determine what happens next.
The questions that shape a home
Some of the most important self-build decisions come from lived experience.
- How do we want to move through our home on a Monday morning?
- How do we make the house work for our children, our pets and our future selves?
- Where does compromise work for us, and where does it work against us?
- How do we want this home to support the way we actually live?
These are not secondary questions. They are fundamental ones.
In self-build, women often help guide these decisions with clarity, insight and determination.
They are not passengers in the journey. They are choosing the route and helping shape the home that will carry them there.
Freedom to build your house your way
At Fleming Homes, our philosophy has always been about giving people the freedom to build their house their way.
Not forcing them into a standard design.
Not asking them to compromise on their vision.
But helping them create a home that reflects who they are and how they want to live.
Because that freedom matters.
It matters to the people who want more from their home. It matters to the families who want their layout, performance and design choices to reflect real life. And it matters to the women whose ideas, judgement and resilience are helping shape self-build projects every day.
Celebrating the women choosing freedom
This is why the women involved in self-build projects across the UK deserve to be celebrated.
They are making one of the boldest choices anyone can make. They are choosing to question the standard route. They are choosing to believe they can create something better. They are choosing freedom.
Freedom from compromise they are not prepared to accept.
Freedom to be more curious about what is possible.
Freedom to create a home that is genuinely right for them.
This International Women’s Day, we celebrate the women who are brave enough to do that — the women with a vision, the courage to take a leap of faith, and the determination to keep going.
Here’s to the women self-building their own homes, whether as part of a husband-and-wife partnership, two wives, another family set-up, or as solo self-builders.
We celebrate your courage, your ambition and your belief that home should be built around the life you want to live.
