Supporting the Next Generation of Entrepreneurs
Every self-build starts with a decision. A moment where you step into the unknown and commit to making something your own.
That same mindset sits at the heart of entrepreneurship.

Recently, Sarah Mathieson, Managing Director at Fleming Homes, spent time mentoring students through the Young Enterprise Scotland Company Programme. The experience offered a clear reminder of how early exposure to real-world challenges can shape confidence, resilience, and decision-making.
The programme gives S5 and S6 pupils the opportunity to create and run their own business, taking an idea from concept through to launch. It is hands-on, practical, and often their first experience of turning thinking into action.
Working with a group of students from Berwickshire High School, one thing stood out immediately: commitment.
Despite having no dedicated time in their timetable, the team chose to meet weekly during lunch breaks to build their company. That consistency carried through everything they did.
Their idea, a colouring book designed to encourage non-screen-based activity, was simple but thoughtful. By creating two versions of each image, they made it possible for children and family members to take part together, encouraging connection, creativity, and a sense of calm.
Like any project, challenges came quickly. Supply chain constraints forced the team to adapt, rethink, and keep moving forward.
“Entrepreneurship is not just about starting a business. It is about mindset, resilience, and the confidence to take a leap of faith.”
That mindset showed in how the team responded. They learned quickly, stayed engaged, and turned effort into something tangible.
Their work was recognised with a Best Presentation award, a reflection of both their thinking and their determination.
Experiences like this highlight something important.
Confidence is not built through theory alone. It comes from doing, testing ideas, making decisions, and seeing the outcome. For many, it is the first time they realise what they are capable of.
“Giving young people the chance to experience this early helps them see what is possible.”
For Fleming Homes, this resonates closely with the self-build journey.
Taking on a build requires many of the same qualities. Clarity in decision-making, resilience when things do not go to plan, and the confidence to move forward even when the full picture is not yet clear.
Supporting the next generation of entrepreneurs is about more than business. It is about building capability, confidence, and a mindset that carries forward into everything they choose to do.
