Self-build insulation

Looking for flexible self-build insulation? Fleming Homes provides bespoke high-performance external wall insulation offering exactly the right specification for every self-build project.

External Wall Insulation

Whether you’re looking for U-value advice on our pre-insulated self-build panels or a bespoke solution based on your architect’s specification, we can deliver! Because we build our timber frame panels and pre-insulated panels in-house, we can give self-builders the full spectrum of options.

As a starting point for your project, you could consider one of the typical insulation specifications shown below, ranging in U-value from 0.16-0.11W/m²K. If you have a particular U-value or specification in mind, we can build exactly what you need.

0.11W/m²K OPTION
A popular detail which provides exceptional levels of thermal insulation combining high performance with cost efficiency.

0.13W/m²K OPTION (with an external leaf of masonry)
A great solution for self-builders looking to achieve a good level of thermal efficiency and who are happy to do some of the work themselves onsite. Material cost wise this option offers savings if you are willing to be ‘hands-on’.

0.16W/m²K OPTION
If you are simply looking to meet the building regulation requirements for thermal efficiency this is a good value option. Please note that without the inner layer of insulation compensatory measures such as triple glazing or renewables could be required to pass Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) for energy and environmental performance due to thermal bridging requirements.

The above U-values are based on using an external leaf of masonry.
If cladding such as timber, or composite is used, the figures will alter slightly. Please speak to our team if you have chosen an alternative exterior finish to establish a U-value based on your specification.

ECO OPTIONS
We also produce insulation details that use bio-based, natural materials like sheep’s wool, wood fibre and hemp, as well as offering homegrown timber as an option for panel manufacture.

0.16W/m²K
U-VALUE OPTION

Our 0.16W/m²K was specifically designed to achieve an efficient balance between product and installation costs and expected payback periods relative to performance.

The primary rigid insulation layer is factory-fitted, with site-fixed VC reflective foil vapour/air-tight barrier fitted on top. It has a 45mm service void – deep enough to avoid the need to puncture the airtight barrier. With plasterboard fitted over, it provides a good ‘value option’ with a U-value of 0.16 (based on an external leaf of masonry).

  • Wall Plate - 140x38mm treated timber
  • Studs - 140x38mm treated timber @ 600mm crs (subject to engineering)
  • Lintels - 2/220x45mm C24 treated timber (subject to engineering)
  • Sheathing - 9.5mm OSB3 (factory fitted)
  • Breather Membrane - Glidevale Protect TF200 Thermo (factory fitted)
  • Headplate - 140x38mm treated timber
  • Insulation - 120mm PIR rigid insulation (factory fitted)
  • Vapour/Air Tightness Barrier - Glidevale Protect VC reflective foil ultra
  • Service Void Battens - 45x45mm treated timber @ 600mm crs
  • Plasterboard - Wallboard TEN plasterboard

0.13W/m²K
U-VALUE OPTION

This an excellent solution for self-builders looking to achieve a good level of thermal efficiency and who are happy to take on some work onsite to reduce costs. Delivers a U-value of 0.13 W/m²K (based on an external leaf of masonry).

  • Wall Plate - 140x38mm treated timber
  • Studs - 140x38mm treated timber @ 600mm ctrs (subject to engineering)
  • Lintels - 2/220x45mm C24 treated timber
  • Sheathing - 9.5mm OSB3 (factory fitted)
  • Breather membrane - Glidevale Protect TF200 Thermo (factory fitted)
  • Headplate - 140x38mm treated timber
  • Insulation (layer 1) - 140mm thick Knauf Insulation Frametherm roll 35
  • Insulation (layer 2) - 50mm PIR rigid insulation
  • Vapour/Air Tightness Barrier - Glidevale Protect VC foil ultra
  • Service Void Battens - 45x45mm treated timber @ 600mm ctrs
  • Plasterboard - Wallboard TEN plasterboard

0.11W/m²K
U-VALUE OPTION

For a lifetime of much lower energy bills, look no further than our 0.11W/m²K option, designed for ‘fabric first’ self-build thinking. This specification uses combined insulating layers to achieve its exceptional performance. The core layer is factory-fitted 120mm PIR rigid insulation, complemented by a 20mm air gap to the extremity of the structural stud. A site-fixed layer of 50mm PIR rigid insulation addresses cold bridging, and is sheathed internally with a VC reflective foil acting as an air-tight barrier. Generous battens (45mm) create a cavity sufficient for service runs. Finished with Wallboard TEN plasterboard, the U-value is exceptional at 0.11W/m²K (based on an external leaf of masonry).
