Borders Business Excellence Awards Bring Double Recognition

Awards winners at Scottish Borders Business Excellence Awards

We are thrilled that Fleming Homes was named ‘Medium Business of the Year’ at the 2023 Scottish Borders Business Excellence Awards. What’s more, we achieved ‘Highly Commended’ in the Developing the Young Workforce category.

Scottish Borders Chamber of Commerce (SBCC) organise the awards annually to celebrate growth and dynamism across the Borders business community. Within 11 different categories, nominated businesses are assessed on a variety of criteria.  These include business innovation, commitment to developing a dynamic workforce, social and environmental impact and community engagement.

Trevor Jackson, Interim Chair said, “Huge thanks to all those involved in the Scottish Borders Business Excellence Awards. The event demonstrates the width and breadth of talent on offer in our region and all nominees should be very proud of themselves.”

To reach the shortlist in two categories and be named alongside so many terrific Borders businesses was a great honour. And so, it was with some excitement that our Operations Coordinator, Lisa Laing, joined other nominees, the organisers and sponsors for the big reveal.  This happened at a glittering black-tie event at the Peebles Hydro on Friday 1st September. It proved to be a fantastic evening, showcasing the best businesses in the area, and receiving Medium Business of the Year from David Richardson, Chief Entrepreneurial Executive at Heriot Watt University, turned out to be the icing on the cake. We would like to express our thanks to everyone who organised the awards and the ceremony and we congratulate every one of the amazing businesses represented. View the full list of winners.

Flagship Values

Undoubtedly it was difficult for the judges to select overall winners, especially considering the high standard of nominees.  At Fleming Homes, we have clearly defined values that underline all aspects of our business and we believe that this helped to set us apart.

Our mission is to deliver value in every customer interaction, in order to make self-building more straightforward. We aim to deliver a quality product, but recognize service is a key part of this. Our commitment to service comes from our FLAGSHIP values (Family, Loyalty, Ambition, Growth, Support, Health & Wellbeing, Integrity, and Positivity). You can read more about our values here.

Teamwork is central to us getting our work done. To this end, we treat our team with the same level of care and support as our external customers. Examples of this includes staff days for the purpose of engendering greater communications and relationships across the company. As well as activities with a health and wellness theme, such as a 24 hour charity ride for Marie Curie, a 13 mile team walk along the Northumberland Coast route, and a weekly fruit box to encourage healthy choices.

We genuinely believe that our people are our most valuable asset. This is why, guided by our values, our most important investment is in our team.

We constantly consider innovative ways to recruit and retain good people. For instance, we recently invested in a secondment opportunity for one of our valued team members. You can read more about Craig and his experiences in a previous article.

In summary, when we receive an award or positive feedback from our clients, the recipient is the whole Fleming Homes team, rather than one or two individuals. In fact, our team tells us that shared camaraderie is one of the best things about working at Fleming Homes.
